Ian’s interest in film practice began during his degree studies in Graphic Design and Animation. On completion of his BA he spent two months in New York learning how to use a 16mm camera and directing his first short. He later worked as a teaching assistant at London’s branch of the New York Film Academy.
His second short film, ‘Def,’ screened at many festivals internationally and won prizes as diverse as Best Short at the New York International Children’s Film Festival and the top prize and audience award at PiFAN – a fantasy and horror festival in South Korea.
He completed an MA at the National Film and TV School last year, where he received a first. He attended the 2008 Edinburgh Film Festival as a Skillset Trailblazer where his graduation film ‘Outcasts’ premiered. This film and another of his student shorts, ‘Smile,’ are currently on the festival circuit. He has attended this year’s Cinema Extreme workshop and is currently making a new short, ‘Jenny and the Worm’ for Film London’s Digital Shorts scheme. He is also working with Vertigo Films on a micro-budget feature, ‘Guinea Pigs.’
